On Sept. 6, 1930, George Jenkins opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven. In 1935, he opened a second location across town. He closed these first two stores to open his dream store, the first Publix Super Market, on Nov. 8, 1940. A "food palace" of marble, glass and stucco, this store included innovations such as air In 1957, the first Publix Danish Bakery store opened in the Southgate Shopping Center in Lakeland, Florida, located next to the store. Adjacent bakeries also opened in other locations, eventually moving inside the actual store as a bakery department. During the 1970s and 1980s, Publix opened just as many bakeries as they did grocery stores. 1980s — Our 50th Anniversary. Publix celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1980, and opened its 300th store in Tampa, Florida. Publix opened a new dairy plant in 1981 and the first Publix Pharmacy in 1986. By the end of 1989, the company had 367 stores and 62,000 associates.
