Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia ( Russian: Анастасия Николаевна Романова, romanized : Anastasiya Nikolaevna Romanova; 18 June [ O.S. 5 June] 1901 - 17 July 1918) was the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, the last sovereign of Imperial Russia, and his wife Tatiana Romanov, The Young "Governess". The Russia into which Tatiana Romanov was born — on June 10, 1897, in the Peterhof Palace in St. Petersburg — was a country on the edge. As was true for so much of its history, Russia was torn between pride in maintaining its traditions and fear of being left behind by the countries of Western Europe. In 1917, revolution erupted in Russia and Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate, bringing an end to more than 300 years of Romanov rule.
