Chirripó National Park was created on August 19, 1975. It has an area of 50,150 ha (123,923 acres ). The park includes the highest mountain in Costa Rica, Cerro Chirripó. Cerro Chirripó is the tallest mountain in Costa Rica. Rising 12,533 feet (3,820 meters) above sea level, it offers hikers sweeping views of the surrounding Talamanca Mountains. Hikers reach Chirripó's dramatic peak via a 12.4-mile (20-km) trail that climbs over 7,218 feet (2,000 meters) from the tiny mountain village of San Gerardo de Rivas.
