Chirripó National Park was created on August 19, 1975. It has an area of 50,150 ha (123,923 acres ). The park includes the highest mountain in Costa Rica, Cerro Chirripó. The mountain has an altitude of 3,920 m (12,861 ft ). In the indigenous language, "Chirripó" means Land of Eternal Waters. The park protects many rivers such as Rio Cerro Chirripó is the tallest mountain in Costa Rica. Rising 12,533 feet (3,820 meters) above sea level, it offers hikers sweeping views of the surrounding Talamanca Mountains.
