Edward Norton Lorenz was born in West Hartford, Connecticut, on 23 May 1917, and developed an early interest in science. "As a boy I was always interested in doing things with numbers and was also fascinated by changes in the weather," he later wrote ( 1 ). After receiving degrees in mathematics from Dartmouth in 1938, and Harvard in 1940 Ed Lorenz, a founder of chaos theory, also developed revolutionary ideas about the energetics of stratified, rotating fluids and made important contributions to the understanding of atmospheric dynamics and weather prediction.He was on the faculty of MIT from 1955 to his retirement in 1988.
