Wemindji, Quebec, a small Cree community nestled on the east coast of James Bay at the mouth of the Maquatua River, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Home to approximately 1,500 people, this community is the seat of the Cree Nation of Wemindji and is located within the federal riding of Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou. Wemindji is a small community surrounded by a vast wilderness. It is on Paint Hills Bay about 5 km from the open water of James Bay, and is surrounded with many lakes, inlets, bays and islands. During the summer, canoes and motorboats are the most common way to access the surrounding area. During winter, snowmobiles are the usual means of Wemindji means "painted mountains" or "ochre mountains" in reference to the beautiful backdrop of this community nestled on the edge of James Bay. Its vast landscape is its main attraction, but learning about the Cree culture is very meaningful too.
