Terminology. First Nations is a term used to describe Indigenous peoples in Canada who are distinct from Métis or Inuit. Section 35 of the Constitution Act of 1982 declares that Aboriginal peoples (the legal term used for Indigenous peoples) in Canada include Indian (First Nations), Inuit and Métis peoples.
