Richard Serra grew up a free spirit in San Francisco during the 1930s. Frolicking among the sand dunes in his own backyard, he had little exposure to fine arts early in life. He spent time with his working-class immigrant father, a pipe-fitter at a local Marine Shipyard. Serra recalls one of his first memories on-base witnessing an oil tanker Richard Serra, the American artist known for bending the boundaries of sculpture, has died at the age of 85. Serra died at home on Tuesday at his home in New York. The cause of death was pneumonia, his lawyer John Silberman confirmed to the New York Times.
