Beloit's history begins when the city was founded in 1836. Caleb Blodgett purchased the land from a French trapper named Joseph Thiebault for three "looks," a standard Native American unit of measure. Essentially, Blodgett had to hike as far as he could see three times and stake claim at the borders of his new territory.
