Zygopetalum. Amsonia (Bluestar) Amsonia, often called Bluestar, is a robust perennial known for its star-shaped blue flowers, elegant habit, and vibrant fall colors. Habit: Amsonia boasts an upright, bushy growth habit, reaching a height of 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) and spreading as wide. It forms a substantial clump with lance-shaped, willowy foliage. Amsonia grows 1- to 3-feet tall and wide depending on the selection. It's an herbaceous perennial, but grows into a small, shrub-like shape with willowy-narrow leaves. There are a few selections of amsonia to consider. Amsonia tabernaemontana is the hardiest and 'Storm Cloud' is a nice selection that grows 2-feet tall. My very unofficial results with my Amsonia would not surprise today's guest, Sam Hoadley of Mt. Cuba Native Plant Center in Delaware, whose trial garden team there just completed a 10-year evaluation of a range of bluestars.
