Owing to a mishap, Iyer lost both her hands and sustained severe injuries to her legs when she was 13. She could not walk for the first six months, and after 18 months of hospitalisation, she taught herself to walk again and use a pair of prosthetic hands. An ammunition depot in the vicinity had exploded months ago, scattering bomb pieces throughout the neighbourhood. The blast left Malvika with the loss of both her hands. Additionally, she suffered from multiple fractures, nerve paralysis and hypoesthesia.
