Obstruent. An obstruent ( / ˈɒbstruːənt / OB-stroo-ənt) is a speech sound such as [ k], [ d͡ʒ], or [ f] that is formed by obstructing airflow. Obstruents contrast with sonorants, which have no such obstruction and so resonate.
