New OBS students usually need 5-10 training sessions to pass their initial competency check and begin to control on the VATSIM network at Oakland Ground. Students usually take 1½ to 3 years to complete the entire training progression. The Oakland ARTCC on VATSIM strives to be one of the most professional and realistic ARTCCs in VATUSA, and controllers are expected to know and learn a significant amount of information. VATUSA is a division of the VATSIM Americas region comprising of almost all airspace operated by the real world Federal Aviation Administration.
