ABSTRACT This article attempts to account for professional historians' relative neglect of the history of economic life over the past thirty years, looking mainly at the American case. This neglect Elected. 2004. Professor William H. Sewell Jr. is the Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago and a Trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study. Sewell has made significant contributions in the areas of modern French labor, social, cultural, and political history and Sewell is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as a trustee of the institute for Advanced Study (2009-14) and as president of the Social Science History Association (2011-12). Sewell is also a serious amateur photographer.
