Kristalina Georgieva was elected Managing Director of the IMF on September 25, 2019. She assumed her position on October 1, 2019. Before joining the Fund, Ms. Georgieva was CEO of the World Bank from January 2017 to September 2019, during which time she also served as Interim President of the World Bank Group for three months. Georgieva is different, though, in that she is the first IMF head to come from a former communist country: she was born in Sofia in 1953 - the year Joseph Stalin died. It is safe to say none of Former World Bank officials have described Ms. Georgieva as a polarizing figure, but she has generally won praise at the I.M.F.
