One windmill to fall foul of such dangers was the now demolished windmill at Toot Hill, where lightning once struck the mill and endangered the life of the miller. Stanford Rivers is a large parish whose north-east boundary is ½ mile south-west of Chipping Ongar. (fn. 1) The soil is Boulder Clay and London Clay with small patches of gravel.
