Whiteman, was a highly respected music teacher whose later students included Jimmie Lunceford and his mother had been an opera singer. The younger Whiteman began playing viola when he was seven, was trained as a classical musician, and performed with the Denver Symphony Orchestra during 1907-14. Well-known dance music director Paul Whiteman wanted to cancel his concert on February 12, 1924.
