Crownest is mentioned at least as far back as 1510 in the Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, as explained by John Reid in his 2009 book The Place Names of Falkirk and East Stirlingshire (4). Reid suggests that "nest" may be an assimilation of "ness," a promontory; there is a small headland leading down to the Carron River, where the lands of Crownest were located, according to Reid.
