Laemmle Theatres was started in 1938 by my grandfather Max Laemmle and his brother Kurt. They were introduced to the movie business by their uncle, Carl Laemmle, who was the founder of Universal Studios. The business started out as a chain of neighborhood theatres, but there was always an interest in playing foreign-language films. Laemmle Theatres is a group of family-run arthouse movie theaters in the Los Angeles area.
