It is 20 kilometres west of the provincial boundary between Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Prior to the development of branch lines, it served an area extending from the Qu'Appelle to the Souris river in southeastern Saskatchewan. The community continues as an important service and judicial centre. Moosomin, Saskatchewan, incorporated as a town in 1887, population 2,743 (2016 census), 2,485 (2011 census).
