Kleinwort Benson had made the acquisition in order to acquaint itself with price trends and auction techniques in the American treasuries market. But KBGS seldom participated in auctions, nor was its familiarity with the demand for treasury securities as strong as had been hoped. In 1988, Kleinwort Benson sold a 25% interest in KBGS to Fuji Bank. The Kleinwort name first became associated with banking in 1786 when Hinrich Kleinwort went into partnership with Otto Paul Mtiller and opened an office in Altona, which was then in Holstein. The Kleinworts were enterprising folk-a combination of ambition and good fortune had enabled them to improve their situation over the preceding centuries. In 1961 a merger with the firm of Robert Benson, Lonsdale and Company, investment bankers, created Kleinwort Benson Limited. Robert Benson was a family firm with Quaker origins in the Lake District.
