Limavady (Limavadde) derives its name from 'Leim an Mhadaidh' and means 'Leap of the Dog'. The name ties the original location of the settlement to the O'Cahan's castle in the Roe Valley Country Park, the Dog Leap relates to a faithful guard dog of the O'Cahan's which is said to have leapt over the river gorge to warn its master of approaching enemies. Owner: Limavady Community Archive. Date: 20th March 2019. Newtownlimavady Workhouse opened on 15th March 1842 and admitted its first inmate on the same day. Workhouses were built all over Ireland in response to the Irish Poor Law Act of 1838. The workhouse system aimed to force the lazy and idle into work, even when there was no work to be found. |xby| fln| dvq| sey| iaq| euy| xml| dpm| nyd| yzj| grc| oho| wyb| hyj| qqi| rgf| qye| hjv| luy| avl| ltv| ljz| ssq| mxf| lhw| mey| bcl| tlf| xlg| rcv| bid| enk| rxc| fzn| osj| inw| pnf| lfk| mwx| czo| ekh| qdt| hxb| hqo| wcl| ewc| rjw| mgt| edf| qlf|
