Andromeda the closest giant spiral galaxy has been formed through a major merger, less than 3 billion years ago. This is the conclusion from a numerical study based on very large computers and led by an astronomer of the Observatoire de Paris - PSL, laboratory Galaxies, Etoiles, Physique et Instrumentation - GEPI (Observatoire de Paris - PSL / CNRS / Université Paris Diderot).
