John Watts Young was born at St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco, California, on September 24, 1930, to William Young, a civil engineer, and Wanda Young (née Howland).: 9 His father lost his job during the Great Depression, and the family moved to Cartersville, Georgia, in 1932. Kristina Wong has many fond memories of growing up in San Francisco's Sunset District, but middle school is nowhere near those lovely recollections. As a young teen in the early '90s, once her John Philip Young (August 9, 1849 - April 23, 1921) was an American newsman and writer. He was managing editor of the San Francisco Chronicle for 44 years, and wrote variously on history, economics, and journalism.
