LAS VEGAS, NV - A San Angelo man earned the title of 2023 Lowrider of the Year after winning the 46th Annual Las Vegas Super Show with a car he modified here. Local car enthusiast Ray Canales, on October 1, 2023, won the car show for the second year in a row. A lowrider or low rider is a customized car with a lowered body that emerged among The Photo Team. Photographer Kristin Bedford spent five years capturing the essence of East LA's lowrider scene. The results are astounding. The lowrider scene has been an integral part of the Mexican American community since the first customised Chevy Impala bounced its way up Whittier Boulevard in the 1940s. You can't call it a subculture. But by 1959, Ron Aguirre created a systemthat would change the lowrider game — forever. As a way to bypass the California ban on lowriders, he installed hydraulics onto his car to raise his car whenever he needed it.
