Paula Rego. The Family 1988. Acrylic paint on paper on canvas. 213.4 × 213.4 cm. Rego, now 86, is preparing for her major retrospective at Tate Britain in the summer. Her narrative works in paint and pastel, drawn from models and props in her Camden studio, often show women in scenes of murderous compliance. Last week, Paula Rego died at 87, and her career ended only then. Her art is disturbing and vigorous, realistic and inspired by fairy tales. Rego grew up under dictatorship in Portugal and lived most of her adult life in England. Fairy tale expert Marina Warner said of Rego, "She's inspired by the torments of convention and the perversity of Paula Rego reinvents fairy tales with eerie scenes. As a new exhibition of her work opens in Paris, Kelly Grovier looks at how the Portuguese artist balances myth and mortality.
