We left the bitumen at Dunmarra and drove west to Top Springs - some 180kms on a reasonable gravel road. In 2000, we'd camped here but it seemed the Roadhouse at Top Springs now no longer Duncan Road leads to the Buntine Highway some 170km away and has several stunning sites to see on the way. The first stop was to check out China Wall, closing the gate as requested, before a short drive to the viewing area. The weather has eroded the hard rock, leaving the vein of sub-vertical white quartz exposed - it looks amazing and would RTA's operations today cover the entire Northern half of Australia, with the company's 90+ prime movers averaging between 145,000 to 170,000km per year, much of which is traveled in clouds of bulldust on unsealed roads.
