Laughing Bird Caye gets its name from its previous role as nesting grounds for the laughing seagulls that were local to the area. The area is technically a "faro," a stretch or coral containing a lagoon at its core, less than 2 acres in size and located roughly 11 miles away from the coastline of Placencia.Since 1991, the island has been the foundation of Laughing Bird Caye National Park, a Laughing Bird Caye has been a national park since 1991. It got its name from the Laughing Gulls that used to occupy the island. They've since moved to other inhabited islands, with less human presence.
