"Looking Beyond" Everest. Makalu, the fifth tallest peak in the world, is a mountain that even Sir Edmund Hillary, on reaching the top of the world on the first ascent of Everest, looked over at and started dreaming about climbing. Everest, left, and Makalu, right. The Makalu Base Camp Trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. Those on the left side of the plane will have a birds-eye view of the eastern Himalaya. From Tumlingtar it is a 4 hour drive to Num, the start of the trek.
