A mid the plethora of essays in the catalogue for Zanele Muholi's forthcoming retrospective at Tate Modern, there is a moving testimony by Lungile Dladla, a South African lesbian.Entitled I Am Zanele Muholi creates potent portraits. Photographing both themselves and those within their LGBTQ+ community in South Africa, the artist speaks to both trauma and resilience; violence and beauty. The people within their photographs often return a powerful gaze directed toward the viewer, and Muholi makes playful use of props, in one well-known Zanele Muholi began their career as an activist, growing up in the Umzali township in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa.
