CHUMASH HISTORY. The following is used with permission and copywrite by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians website: www.santaynezchymash.org. Our people once numbered in the tens of thousands and lived along the coast of California. At one time, our territory encompassed 7,000 square miles that spanned from the beaches of Malibu to Paso Robles. The Chumash Indians traveled to Anacapa in canoes, called tomols. The evidence of their visits lies beneath your feet. The tiny fragments of broken shell glittering in the soil are part of a midden, an archeological site containing remnants of their culture. Twenty-seven archeological sites mark the Chumash presence on Anacapa. Before the Mission Period, the Chumash lived in 150 independent towns and villages with a total population of at least 25,000 people. In different parts of the region, people spoke six different but related languages. The area was first settled at least 13,000 years ago.
