T-Bird History. National Skating Derby, Inc. was founded in 1960 by former Roller Derby skater Herb Roberts along with its flagship team, the Los Angeles Thunderbirds (often referred to as The L.A. T-Birds). NSD was acquired by Bill Griffiths and Jerry Hill in late 1961. The first games being skated in 1961.
