George Washington Cable (1844-1925) was well established in the literary world when he moved to Northampton in 1885. Born in New Orleans in 1844, Cable became a highly regarded novelist, noted for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life. The first of his stories of nineteenth-century New Orleans, Sieur George, appeared in the October 1873 George Washington Cable. "Posson Jone." He lookedup, and saw Washington Green at or near the fence, andsaid, "I thought I warned you not to follow me/' andpulled out his knife, and stabbed Green in the throat,and killed him instantly.
