This article is based on the opening talk given at the conference Stellar Populations 2003, held in Garching, Germany on October 6-10, 2003. The conference was dedicated in memory of Beatrice M. Tinsley. Beatrice Tinsley: A Tribute. A number of half-hearted assistance and incentive programs aimed to conceal the government's neglect of German peasants and farmers and sought to provide temporary support for agriculture. The photo shows young women and girls doing "rural service" ["Landdienst"]. An initiative by the League of German Girls [Bund Deutscher Mädel or Beatrice Hill Tinsley (Figure 1) was a New Zealand scientist, astrophysicist, professor and teacher, in addition to being a woman, a wife and a mother.
