Patient Characteristics. A total of 20 normal subjects of mean age 9.07 ± 2.025 years (range, 1-36 years) were imaged as control. In the Duane syndrome group of 42 patients, the mean age of 5.92 ± 5.02 years (range, 1-32 years). In the overall sample of patients, 20 patients (47.6%) had DRS Type I, 5 patients (12%) had Type II, and 17 AIM: To investigate the innervation pattern of extra-ocular muscles in patients with clinically diagnosed Duane's ocular retraction syndrome (DRS) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 11 patients. Six patients had type I DRS (eight eyes), four patients had type II DRS ( ve eyes) and Duane syndrome results from absent or abnormal development of the abducens nerve or nucleus 4,5. Thus, the lateral rectus muscle becomes abnormally innervated by branches from the oculomotor nerve 4,5. Most cases (90%) are sporadic, however, a minority of cases may have a genetic bases 5.
