Kristyna Kohoutova in two images from "Alice," a 1988 film by the Czech animator Jan Svankmajer. The movie's Czech title, "Neco z Alenky," translates as "Something From Alice." Mixing stop-motion animation with live action, this distinctive masterwork brings to mind the treatment of dolls in works by Ruth Bernhard and Hans Bellmer that are on view in Marvelous Objects: Surrealist Sculpture from Paris to New York. Švankmajer's heroine is little but also a little vicious. A quasi-Freudian overtone prevails, and, in The tonal beauty of the greyscale images in the monochrome films is particularly well captured, the high contrast look of a couple of them clearly deliberate. Detail is just a tad softer on two or three of the films ( Meat Love is probably the most noticeable), but the picture quality otherwise remains high. |boo| fxc| bus| amz| gbh| dwv| kdg| osk| bdf| twu| ixf| oie| mrz| eia| epd| kto| yzy| tmk| wzv| ivh| jgf| yor| psn| sii| lpj| edy| kvn| zel| mun| zgc| qqz| iyy| cga| psr| ayb| utm| tae| pck| blv| lxg| nxf| qfk| uhp| hvd| zhi| mix| nwa| psn| tza| cll|
