Epic is traditionally a literary genre, referring since the time of Aristotle to a type of long narrative poem of heroic content, especially one that induces pathos (Bynum 1976: 49-54). Its use outside literature to mean "long and action-packed" (e.g. "an epic journey") is secondary, a vulgarism.
