Modern Architecture in Kyoto. Many examples of significant architecture appeared in Kyoto as the city re-emerged from a period of decline following transfer of the national capital from Kyoto to Tokyo at the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). Kyoto subsequently took a leading role in the fields of education and advanced technology Manfredo Tafuri (1935-1994), the celebrated Italian architectural historian, published L'Architettura Moderna in Giappone in 1964. At the time, Tafuri was twenty-nine years old and had not visited Japan.
