Midtown Plaza shopping mall was a retail and commercial development mainstay of downtown Rochester from 1962 when it opened until the mid nineties when the anchor department stores left the plaza. See time-line below. The Midtown Plaza venture was announced with great fanfare in January 1958. During that period, the trend of strip plazas was on the rise, and the future of Downtown Rochester seemed uncertain. Two forward-thinking entrepreneurs, Gilbert J.C. McCurdy, and Maurice F. Forman, were determined to address this concern.The Midtown Plaza Monorail exhibit brings back memories of Christmas at that downtown shopping mall.
