Bart Moore-Gilbert is currently writing a monograph on Hanif Kureishi for the Manchester University Press 'Contemporary World Writers' series. As part of the research for this, he has been meeting with Kureishi on a regular basis. The following is an edited extract from an interview which took place at Kureishi's flat in Baron's Court, which focuses on the treatment of London in the author's Bart Moore-Gilbert, for example, observes that the work of both writers alludes to Rudyard Kipling, and suggests that this is an 'area in which Rushdie's influence on Kureishi can be detected' (Moore-Gilbert 2001, p. 127).
