Girdwari forms the basis of taxes on the land as it is the gauge for the assessment of taxes. Charges: The patwaris are an elusive lot. There are some 100,000 of them presently looking after over 500,000 villages all over India. The regular fee that they have been reportedly charging for their 'darshan' in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is beginning to assume serious proportions.
