Virupaksha Temple. This temple, in worship, known as Shri Lokeswara-Maha-Sila-prasada from the epigraphs, was built by Lokamahadevi, the Queen of Vikaramaditya II (A.D.733-745) in about A.D.740 to commemorate her husband's victory over the Pallavas of Kanchipuram. It closely resembles the Kailasanatha temple at Kanchipuram on plan and Virupaksha temple is especially notable for the complexity of its iconography and the profusion of sculptural decoration. The temple consists of an entrance gateway, a Nandi pavilion, porches, a mandapa, and a linga in a garbhagriha. The walls are laden with sculptures, which are positioned in regularly-spaced miniature shrines on the exterior Virupaksha Temple, Pattadakal Overview. The largest temple in Pattadakal, this was built in the 8th century to commemorate the victory of Vikramaditya II over the Pallavas of Kanchi. Multiple inscriptions and stone carvings are featured on the stone mandapa.
