Marae provide a tūrangawaewae , 'a place to stand', for whānau, hapū and iwi. With many whānau living away from their ancestral lands, urban marae provide a local gathering place in many larger towns and cities. Whether papatipu (ancestral) or urban, marae offer tamariki a sense of their connection with their whanaunga and te ao Māori. On 28 May 2021 the Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Evolutionary Computation Research Group (DSAI/ECRG) from the Faculty of Engineering at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington visited the Pipitea Marae.
