The best thing about Gowanus for me was being walking distance from Whole Foods, which is surprisingly affordable relative to local NYC grocery stores. Edited to add: Basically, Gowanus is cheaper than Park Slope for a reason. It's not a terrible option, but if the price difference is only $100 and you can afford Park Slope, I'd go for Park Slope.
