Pura Besakih, considered the most important Hindu temple in Bali, is actually a complex of 23 separate temples that can be explored by tourists. Pura Besakih made the world spotlight in 1963 when Besakih Great Temple is built close to the village of Besakih in the eastern part of Bali, Indonesia. The temple complex is spread over a vast area on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung, the highest volcano in Bali. The temple is roughly 53 kilometers (or about a 1.5 hour drive without traffic) northeast of Denpasar, the capital city of Pura Besakih. Top choice in East Bali. Perched nearly 1000m up the side of Gunung Agung, this is Bali's most important Hindu temple. The site encompasses 23 separate but related temples, with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung, built on six levels terraced up the slope.
