The documentary presence of the term «literatura de cordel» in Spanish can be verify at least since the second half of the 19th century, although the undeniable significance of the Ensayo sobre la literatura de cordel written by Julio Caro Baroja (1969) has extended the belief that it was its autor who coigned it. This article aims to clarify the etymology of the expression attending to the Cordel literature (from the Portuguese term, literatura de cordel, literally "string literature", Portuguese pronunciation: [koʁˈdɛw]) are popular and inexpensively printed booklets or pamphlets containing folk novels, poems and songs.
