Toheroa james te tuhi

A portrait of Sir James Henare in 1984. Born in 1911, Sir James Henare acknowledged descent from many northern iwi, including Ngāti Whātua and Ngāpuhi. He was a great-grandson of Colonel Robert Wynyard, who commanded the British 58th Regiment during the Northern War (1845-46). At the age of 14 he graduated from the last Ngāti Hine whare Within minutes of entering a classroom, James Te Tuhi has captivated his young audience with tales of Pingao, how she was placed on the dunes by her father, Tangaroa, to nurture her whanau, the Toheroa. As the story unfolds, the Te Kopuru kaumatua reveals one of the mysteries of the toheroa's life cycle: where and how the juveniles grow. Two local men, Barry Searle and Jim Te Tuhi, have been instrumental in establishing the toheroa project. They have been working to save the toheroa population in Northland over many years and are now working with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to re-establish a growing toheroa population.
