The Central Securities Depositories Regulation was adopted in 2014 in the wake of the financial crisis. Its aim was to improve the safety and efficiency of settlements and provide a set of common requirements for CSDs across the EU. In July 2021 the Commission reported that, while the regulation was broadly successful in achieving its On 5 January 2023, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) entered into force. It modernises and strengthens the rules concerning the social and environmental information that companies have to report. A broader set of large companies, as well as listed SMEs, will now be required to report on sustainability.
