Objective: We explored whether initial treatment with the herbal drug uva ursi (UU) reduces antibiotic use in women with uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) without increasing symptom burden and complication frequency compared with antibiotic treatment. Methods: A double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted in 42 family practices in Germany. Advice to take ibuprofen reduced the odds of antibiotic use among women participants (OR 0.27, 95% CI .10e0.72; p 0.009) but uva-ursi did not impact anti-biotic use signi cantly (OR 0.59, 95% CI .22e1.58; p 0.293).
