A Lady Lake man has pleaded not guilty to a second degree murder charge in the death of a 25-year-old alum of the Villages Charter School. Michael Cates of 6001 Lake Griffin Road allegedly shot Jeremy Yelton of Fruitland Park during a struggle after Cates' stepdaughter claimed she had been battered by Yelton. Michael Cates, 49, of Lady Lake, had faced a charge of second-degree murder in the Nov. 21, 2015 death of Jeremy Yelton, an alum of the Villages High School. The fatal altercation on Griffin View Road had been sparked by Cates' stepdaughter's accusation that she had been abused by Yelton, with whom she had been in a romantic relationship. Cates went looking for Jeremy Yelton, 25, after his wife told him Yelton battered the stepdaughter earlier in the evening, shoving her face against a car window, sheriff's Lt.
