Originally we bred our Iron Age Pigs to root up the grassy sward and prepare the ground for tree regeneration. This worked well and the pigs were excellent rotavators! Today we breed Ironage pigs for their tasty meat which we sell from the farm. Our slaughter house is just 15 miles away and once butchered the different cuts of meat are sold frozen. This article reviews recent studies of pigs in the Iron Age in the southern Levant. The studies were carried out as part of the European Research Council-funded Ancient Israel project, with the aim of examining questions of identity and ethnic. Iron Age pigs are slower growing than many more modern breeds and tend to be lean and leggy so they can take as long as 18 months to reach slaughter weight with 8-9 months being a minimum.
